It’s Good for My Loins

So I will sing praise to Your name forever,

That I may daily perform my vows.

  • Psalm 61:8

I recently viewed a social media video. From a dash cam a young teenage boy is seen in the passenger seat with his dad driving. Dad is singing to the radio. The boy, annoyed and embarrassed by his dad’s zealous behavior, tells his dad to stop singing. The dad simply replies, “I want to sing. It’s good for my loins.” And then commences to joyfully sing and sway his head to the annoyance of his son. The dad urged his son to sing with him, but the son chose to remain miserable, a stark contrast to his dad’s evident joy.

To this dad singing brought joy. The video of him singing was very humorous and brought me joy as well. The Bible confirms that singing brings joy, “For You make me glad by Your deeds, Lord, I sing for joy at what Your hands have done.” (Psalm 92:4)

But according to Psalm 61:8 (above) singing does more than just make us happy. Singing actually helps us remain faithful in our daily walk. By singing Bible songs, hymns, and spiritual songs we are internalizing God’s love for us and expressing our love for Him to anyone in earshot. These songs go deep down into our souls, you might say “our loins,” and satisfies the longing we have to connect to our Maker like no other sacrifice, service or act of worship we can do.

Parents besides the pleasure you may get in embarrassing or annoying your teenage children with your singing in the vehicle it has the added benefit of passing along Biblical truths to your children that stick. The melody will ring in the head, but the words will always settle in the heart. No wonder God calls for us to participate in such a glorifying activity with each other at least once a week. As the man says, “It’s good for my loins.”

It is a shame to see some people that refuse to sing and choose to remain miserable, much like the son in this video, even during our times of worship. Whether you are a good singer or not, singing grants more benefits than we realize. So choose to raise the rafters today with your singing voice. It’s pleasing to God, and it’s good for your loins.
